Bringing Inclusive and Accessible Teaching Strategies to the One-Shot

Practicing inclusive teaching is critical to reaching all learners. The more we learned about inclusive, antiracist, and critical pedagogy, the more we realized those practices aligned perfectly with our teaching philosophies and values. However, many of the resources and strategies we found in our research were aimed at instructors teaching semester-long, credit-bearing courses. Our poster adapts those suggestions for instructors teaching one-time library sessions or workshops, with an additional page of further readings and tips for those looking for a deep-dive into inclusive pedagogy.

Thank you so much for this! There are some really great ideas to consider here. I've run into problems with Poll Everywhere due to its max audience size when I might have larger classes (particularly this past year when I've taught sections to some combined remote classes). Have you found any good comparable tools that allow for larger audience participation and feedback?

Thank you for your question! We are really lucky that UNC-CH has begun providing the paid version of PollEverywhere for staff and students in recent years, and completely recognize that's a privileged position to be in!

Here are some free tools that I've personally used, in the order I would recommend them:

Mentimeter (https://www.mentimeter.com/) Similar to PollEv, but no audience limits on the free version

AnswerGarden (https://answergarden.ch/) VERY quick set up, great for word clouds, no audience limits. I use this one for group keyword or topic brainstorming, for example: https://answergarden.ch/1694568

Socrative (https://www.socrative.com/) Audience limit of 50 responses; can set up polls/games with a competive element. I used this one a lot when I taught in K-12.

Jade recommends this resource for selecting tech tools: Project Zero and Making Thinking Visible has some of my favorite resources on pairing learning outcomes with learning activities and associated online tools, though I haven't personally validated which ones might be appropriate based on audience size: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JM826jA_dZobwu21SaLlovzaaetuJiFO0aCn9IIQDyo/edit

Thanks again for stopping by!

There is a lot of good advice here, and definitely a lot of food for thought in the links presented on your site!

Re using student names:
One of the things I have loved about Zoom is that displays the students’ names, and they can customize it with their preferred names and pronouns (if they wish). Reusable dry erase table tents is a great idea for in-person classes, but keep in mind that there may be folks with scent sensitivities to the strong odor of the markers.

I definitely agree about Zoom- the flexibility to customize participant names is a wonderful option. I really appreciate your comment about the reusable dry erase table tents because it's a consideration that I hadn't thought of but will definitely now be incorporating - keeping a pre-folded set of cardstock tents in hand with non-scented writing options as an inclusive alternative. Thanks for engaging with us!

Thank you for including Librarians who teach one-shot library instruction. I'm always looking for new and/or refreshed ways to reach our students whether one on one teaching or in the class room.
