TILC 2024: FINITE MEANS. INFINITE USES.
PROPOSAL DEADLINE HAS PASSED
It’s TILC’s 10th anniversary! Gifts for this observation are “aluminum” or “tin”, which got us thinking about recycling, reusing, and repurposing, and how this relates to library instruction and teaching. Playing with Noam Chomsky’s observation that language makes infinite use of finite means, we ask, “How do librarians create or generate new experiences and interventions from ones that already exist?”
Possible topics could be:
We hope this theme will help you brainstorm ideas, but we will welcome any proposals related to innovative practices related to teaching and learning in libraries. Our conference attendees especially appreciate stories of practical application.
Proposals are invited for four different session types
Poster, session, and lightning talk presenters will be offered a reduced registration rate. If your proposal is accepted, you are required to register for the conference. Up to two presenters can register at the discounted presenter rate for a presentation. One presenter in a lightning talk or poster session may register at the discounted presenter rate.
Note: Failure to pay the registration fee will result in the cancellation of presentation and conference registration. All presenters are responsible for paying their own travel and lodging expenses.
Pre-conference workshop presenters will have their registration fees waived and will receive an honorarium of $200 in total, to be divided among the presenters.

Playing with Noam Chomsky’s observation that language makes infinite use of finite means, we ask, “How do librarians create or generate new experiences and interventions from ones that already exist?”
Possible topics could be:
- Reusing or repurposing exercises, activities, or lesson plans
- Reconsidering approaches for classes
- The role of generative AI in information literacy
- Adapting ideas and practices from other disciplines to library instruction
We hope this theme will help you brainstorm ideas, but we will welcome any proposals related to innovative practices related to teaching and learning in libraries. Our conference attendees especially appreciate stories of practical application.
Proposals are invited for four different session types
- 2-hour pre-conference workshop (presented Thursday afternoon before the poster session)
- Posters (presented at the Thursday evening social)
- 50-minute presentations
- 5 to 7 minute lightning talks
- A pre-conference workshop should have broad appeal and incorporate a mix of presentation, hands-on activities, and opportunities for brainstorming practical application.
- Presentations are best for sharing activities, lesson plans, etc that have broad appeal and can be easily reproduced at most libraries, or exploring a topic of wide interest and is intended to promote discussion. The most effective presentations combine practical application with a grounding in scholarship or theory.
- Posters are best for case studies that are more unusual, or ones that are interesting but not easily to replicate. They are excellent for one-on-one discussions.
- Lightning talks are intended for quick shares about an activity or tool, or an idea intended to promote new ways of thinking.

Selection Process and Timeline
Proposals will be peer reviewed and then selected by the conference organizers to ensure that TILC offers sessions on a range of topics from a diverse set of institutions and presenters. Note that you may be invited to present in a format other than the one you proposed.
